Welcome! The Wanderbug is an AI-free zone, written for humans, by a human (Genevieve!). I write all content myself, based on my own, real, travel experiences.
Australia is one of the best countries for wine tourism in the world, with more than 65 distinct wine regions. From internationally renowned wine regions like the Barossa Valley, Yarra Valley and McLaren Vale to boutique wine regions like the Tamar Valley and Adelaide Hills, there are so many beautiful wine regions to explore in Australia!
Australia’s best wine regions are in the southern half of the country, where the climate is more agreeable for winemaking – South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania and Western Australia.
Where there is good wine, there is good food, and many major Australian wineries have on-site restaurants, which can range from casual, outdoor dining & snacks, to celebrated, fine-dining restaurants.
I’ve visited dozens of Australian wine regions, and have put together this guide to the 10 best wine regions in Australia to help you plan your first (or next!) trip to Australia’s best wine regions.
1. Barossa Valley Wine Region
The Barossa Valley is Australia’s most iconic wine region, famous for its big, bold reds. Grand wine chateaux dot the Barossa Valley, giving the wine region a European atmosphere against the backdrop of a distinctly Australian landscape.
The Barossa is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions, and is home to more than 150 wineries and 80 cellar doors! Where there is great wine, there is also great food, and the Barossa is no exception, with a number of excellent restaurants across the region, like Vintners Bar & Grill.
Best wineries
- Yalumba is one of Australia’s oldest wineries and has a very cosy tasting room
- Henschke is a true wine-lovers favourite and has a more intimate cellar door experience in the Eden Valley, a sub-region of the Barossa Valley
- Seppeltsfield is a Barossa Valley landmark with an impressive estate and some of the best (and oldest) fortified wines around.
How to get there
The Barossa Valley is in South Australia. It’s an easy 1-hour drive to the Barossa Valley from Adelaide.
Where to stay
Stay in Tanunda, Angaston or Gawler
2. McLaren Vale Wine Region
McLaren Vale is a world-class wine region, located on South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula. Many passionate wine lovers consider it to be the best wine region in Australia, beating even the Barossa, which is no small feat!
McLaren Vale is known for bold, premium red wines like shiraz, grenache and cabernet sauvignon. With a warm Mediterranean climate, it’s become well known for popular and alternative Mediterranean varietals, and has some of the best conditions for growing grenache in the world.
McLaren Vale makes an excellent day trip from Adelaide, especially if you detour along the Fleurieu Peninsula beaches like Port Noarlunga, Port Willunga and Aldinga.
Best wineries
- Coriole for classic Italian winemaking, with a charming cottage cellar door which will transport you straight to Tuscany
- Alpha Box & Dice for new-school and experimental wines
- d’Arenberg is famous for its enormous d’Arenberg Cube & Salvador Dali sculptures, alongside award-winning wines
How to get there
McLaren Vale is a 45-minute drive from Adelaide.
Where to stay
Stay within McLaren Vale to be in the heart of the region or make a day trip from Adelaide
3. Yarra Valley Wine Region
The Yarra Valley is one of the best wine regions in Australia, and is regarded as the premier wine region in Victoria. An easy day trip or weekend trip from Melbourne, the Yarra Valley has more than 80 wineries and 60 cellar doors, ranging from stunning, major cellar doors to charming independent winemakers.
The Yarra Valley is a cool-climate wine region, known for its premium sparkling wines made with traditional French methods (just like Champagne), pinot noir, chardonnay and cool-climate red wines.
Best wineries to visit
- Chandon is one of the most famous wineries in the Yarra Valley and has a beautiful, large cellar door
- Tarra Warra Estatet is an elegant Yarra Valley winery with a more intimate cellar door experience, as well as an onsite art gallery
- Dominique Portet is one of my personal favourites, offering French-style wines including an excellent, Provencal-style rose.
How to get there
The Yarra Valley is a 1-hour drive from Melbourne
Where to stay
Stay near Coldstream, Healesville & Yarra Glen. Healesville is the best town to stay in the Yarra Valley, with a handful of restaurants, cafes & shops.
4. Mornington Peninsula Wine Region
The Mornington Peninsula is one of Melbourne’s most popular weekend getaway destinations, with a world class wine region tucked away behind a coastline dotted with spectacular beaches and vibrant beach towns and villages.
There are more than 200 wineries on the Mornington Peninsula & 50 cellar doors, making it truly one of the best wine regions in Australia for a weekend of wine-ing and dining. The Mornington Peninsula is a cool-climate wine region, and Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir is regarded as some of the very best in Australia – and in my opinion, the world!
Make sure to make a reservation at restaurants on the Mornington Peninsula, as it’s a very busy region and you’ll find that restaurants are often fully booked.
Best wineries
- Port Philip Estate is an impressive, contemporary cellar door with panoramic vineyard & ocean views. The on-site restaurant is spectacular and perfect for a special occasion. They make my favourite pinot noir!
- Crittenden Wines has one of my favourite cellar door experiences, because the tastings are served seated at private tables, making it feel much more relaxed than when you’re standing at the bar.
- Point Leo Estate has one of the most impressive, and largest cellar doors. Sweeping ocean views, two restaurants, including the hatted restaurant Laura, and an expansive sculpture park make it worth a detour to the “other” side of the Peninsula.
How to get there
Most wineries on the Mornington Peninsula are in Red Hill, which is a 1 hour drive from Melbourne.
Where to stay
Most wineries are located in Red Hill, but you could also stay along the coast in beach towns like Dromana or Mt Martha and drive into the wine region each day.
5. Adelaide Hills Wine Region
The Adelaide Hills might fly under the radar internationally, for those outside the wine world, but within Australia the Adelaide Hills is (rightly) recognised as one of the most impressive wine regions in Australia. It’s a very charming region, with historic villages like Hahndorf and farm shop experiences, making it the perfect place to spend a few days.
In contrast to the Barossa Valley, which is nearby, the Adelaide Hills is a cool-climate wine region, known for its traditional method sparkling wines, elegant chardonnay and sauvignon blanc.
Check out my Adelaide Hills Travel Guide for a complete guide to the region.
Best wineries
- Shaw + Smith is a household name & offers a paired snack plate with wine tastings,
- Nepenthe has a beautiful cellar door & a chardonnay that is a dead ringer for white Burgundy, and is located directly across the road from Shaw + Smith
- Cobbs Hill Estate is a very charming cellar door with excellent wines – we joined their wine club!
How to get there
Adelaide Hills is less than 45-minutes’ drive from Adelaide.
Where to stay
We stayed at The Manor in Basket Range, which was a very unique & romantic stay. Also look near Stirling, Woodside, Hahndorf & Crafers.
6. King Valley Wine Region
The King Valley Region was established by migrant Italian families, and is renowned for its Italian varietals, like prosecco, sangiovese, nebbiolo, pinot grigio and barbera.
While a smaller wine region than the wine regions listed above, the King Valley has plenty of quality wineries to fill a couple of days, and is a perfect weekend escape into High Country Victoria.
Best wineries
- Dal Zotto is the most famous winery in the King Valley, and has a popular cellar door – it’s a must visit.
- Pizzini is another Italian-style winery, with an extensive range of wines available on tasting.
- Red Feet is a newer winery, with a rustic shed cellar door setting & stunning views from the lawn over the surrounding landscapes.
How to get there
The King Valley is a 3-hour drive from Melbourne, in High Country Victoria.
Where to stay
Stay in the King Valley or Milawa.
7. Rutherglen Wine Region
Located in northern Victoria, right on the border with New South Wales, Rutherglen is a charming and relaxed wine region that produces award-winning fortified wines, particularly the celebrated Rutherglen Muscat and Rutherglen Topaque (formerly Tokay).
Rutherglen is also well known for its big, bold reds, especially Durif, alongside zinfandel, tempranillo and sangiovese, and dry white Rhone varietals of marsanne, viognier and roussane.
This is a really charming wine region, and is much more relaxed than the wine regions located closer to the capital cities, creating a much more intimate cellar door experience.
Best wineries
- All Saints Estate has a beautiful cellar door housed in a landmark chateau, and two onsite restaurants – the more casual option, Bonnie, has an idyllic garden setting.
- Campbells Wines offers an excellent tasting experience in a smaller cellar door
- Stanton & Killeen is even smaller again, with a rustic shed cellar door setting.
How to get there
Rutherglen is a 3-hour drive from Melbourne.
Where to stay
Stay in or near Rutherglen, or in Beechworth which is a 30-minute drive away.
8. Tamar Valley Wine Region
The Tamar Valley is Tasmania’s premier wine region, with a bucolic countryside setting. Located in Northern Tasmania, not far from Launceston, the Tamar Valley is a cool-climate wine region best known for elegantsparkling wine, chardonnay and pinot noir.
There are approximately 30 boutique wineries in the Tamar Valley, and you’re just as likely to be guided through your tasting by the winemaker themselves.
Best wineries
- Josef Chromy is a household name in the Australian wine world. The cellar door setting is absolutely idyllic, and the wine tasting is generous.
- Swinging Gate Vineyard is a small-scale, independent winery, and at our tasting we were guided by one of the owners, which made it such a personable experience.
How to get there
The Tamar Valley is a 30-minute drive from Launceston
Where to stay
Stay in Launceston & make a day trip to the Tamar Valley, or find accommodation in the region.
9. Heathcote Wine Region
Heathcote Wine Region flies under the radar, but it’s one of Victoria’s hidden gems. Located in the Goldfields region of Victoria, Heathcote is a small wine region with a unique soil composition, that gives the bold Heathcote Shiraz its distinctive flavour profile.
Heathcote wineries can be visited throughout the year, but a great time to visit is during the annual Heathcote on Show wine festival, when several wineries open pop up cellar doors in the heart of Heathcote for the weekend. This is a great way to experience wineries that don’t have a cellar door, and to be able to walk between wine tastings, rather than drive.
Best wineries
- Condie Estate is a small-batch winemaker with a rustic cellar door setting, just 5km from Heathcote
- Heathcote Winery has a cellar door located in the heart of Heathcote
- Peregrine Ridge has a new cellar door with panoramic views over the countryside.
How to get there
Heathcote is a 90-minute drive from Melbourne
Where to stay
Stay in Heathcote, a small and charming town in the Goldfields
10. Macedon Ranges Wine Region
The Macedon Ranges is a lesser-known wine region in Australia, but a great wine region to explore while on a weekend getaway in Daylesford, an elegant spa-town in Victoria.
There are more than 40 boutique wineries in the Macedon Ranges, with more than 27 cellar doors regularly open for tastings. You’ll find mostly independent winemakers in the Macedon Ranges, and will be likely to be served by a winemaker or owner, which adds to the cellar door experience.
Since many cellar doors are smaller and family-run, it is advisable to check in advance whether you need to make a booking for a wine tasting.
The Macedon Ranges is a cool-climate wine region, known for elegant sparkling wines, chardonnay and pinot noir.
Best wineries
- Hanging Rock Winery has stunning views of the iconic, and eponymous, Hanging Rock
- Passing Clouds is a beautiful cellar door in the Macedon Ranges, with high quality wines & a bucolic setting
How to get there
Macedon Ranges wine region is a 1-hour drive from Melbourne
Where to stay
Stay in Daylesford, one of the loveliest country towns in Victoria
